Station Handbook

The GLOSS Station Handbook was constructed to provide further information on each of the tide gauges in GLOSS core network. It was updated during 2005 and these pages form Version 6 of the Handbook.

The Handbook includes references to individual countries and organisations who have made their sea level data (hourly values) available. Plots of annual mean sea level are also available for most sites and site maps are provided for many of the stations.

The Handbook also includes data from the WOCE 'Delayed-mode' Data Assembly Centre (DAC) operated by BODC and from the

• World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) 'Fast-Delivery' DAC
• Joint Archive for Sea Level data (JASL)

both operated by the University of Hawai`i Sea Level Centre (UHSLC).

GLOSS station status map legend

The PSMSL usually provides, each October, a summary of the status of the GLOSS Core Network (GCN) from its viewpoint. An "operational" station, from a PSMSL viewpoint, means that recent MSL monthly and annual values have been received and checked as far as possible, and have been included in the databank. For each of the GCN stations we have used the year of the last data entered into the databank, if any, to place the station into one of four categories:

•   Category 1: "Operational" stations for which the latest data is 2003 or later.
•   Category 2: "Probably operational" stations for which the latest data is within the period 1993-2002.
•   Category 3: "Historical" stations for which the latest data is earlier than 1993.
•   Category 4: "Stations for which no PSMSL data exist.

How to use the GLOSS network status map

Maps

Stations and their status can be displayed on the world map and on regional detail maps. Click on the background to zoom in or out, or select a regional map from the first menu of maps.

Stations

Information for each station can be displayed by clicking a station on the map, or by selecting a station from the second menu which contains a complete list of stations by country. The stations operated by a particular country can be highlighted by selecting the country name from the station list.

Station information

The information provided for each station includes the name of the operating country, the data of last data received (as of Oct 2007), and a link to more detailed station information and data.

Map symbols

The map legend can be viewed by clicking on the Legend link.

Printing

The status map of all stations can be printed by clicking the Print link. Maps can also be printed directly from the main web page, however in some browsers the position of the stations on the printed map will be in error (known bug in IE 6 on the PC). In this case an image of the displayed map can be made using the Print Screen key (PC) or Screen Capture (Mac).
